چکیده

Migration, Transfers and Child Labor We examine agricultural child labor in the context of emigration, transfers, and the ability to hire outside labor. We start by developing a theoretical background based on Basu and Van, (1998), Basu, (1999) and Epstein and Kahana (2008) and show how hiring labor from outside the household and transfers to the household might induce a reduction in children’s working hours. Analysis using Living Standards Measurement Survey (LSMS) data on the Kagera region in Tanzania lend support to the hypothesis that both emigration and remittances reduce child labor. Comments Rotten Parents and Child Labor

Baland and Robinson (2000) investigate the conditions under which decisions by parents about their own children’s work are inefficient. Using a simple two-period model with altruistically linked family members, they show that child labor decisions are efficient when credit markets are perfect and intergenerational altruistic transfers are nonzero. Moreover, they show that when the level of chil...

Welfare impact of a ban on child labor.

This article presents a new rationale for imposing restrictions on child labor. In a standard overlapping generation model where parental altruism results in transfers that children allocate to consumption and education, the Nash-Cournot equilibrium results in suboptimal levels of parental transfers and does not maximize the average level of utility of currently living agents. A ban on child la...

Parental Altruism under Imperfect Information: Theory and Evidence

Can we reconcile the predictions of the altruism model of the family with the evidence on parental monetary transfers in the US? This paper provides a new assessment of this question. I expand the altruism model by introducing effort of the child and by relaxing the assumption of perfect information of the parent about the labor market opportunities of the child. First, I solve and simulate a m...

Intergenerational time transfers and childcare ✩

Although intergenerational transfers of time in the form of grandparenting are substantial, little is known about their role and importance. In this paper, we calibrate an overlapping generations model extended to allow for both time and monetary transfers to the US economy. We use simulations to show that time transfers have important positive effects on labor supply and capital accumulation. ...
